Tree Planting Day at McNicoll Park in Penticton

On April 10th, students from McNicoll Park had the opportunity to plant trees along Penticton Creek. Grades 4-7 students learned some interesting facts about trees and selected their own Ponderosa Pine seedling for planting. Thanks to Phil Rippin (City of Penticton) and his parks staff, this event was a huge success!

Grade 5 Forestry Day

Grade five students from Kelowna traveled to Beaverdell to learn about forest ecology, tree measurements, and compassing. Thanks to RSS forestry teacher Wayne Price and his students for their assistance with the instruction.

High School Field Trips…

The Rutland Senior Secondary Forestry Class took part in a woodlands field trip guided by Bruce Thompson (Tolko) on March 7th.  They learned about silviculture systems and some of the high-tech equipment used in harvesting.  In May, they went on a field trip to the Tolko nursery, sawmill, and plywood mill in Armstrong.

In March, students from the Princess Margaret Senior Secondary Technology class in Penticton learned about some of the harvesting equipment used in forestry and were introduced to other topics such as forest health and silviculture systems.  The most exciting part of their tour was getting the opportunity to try cable logging. Shawn Clark (Gorman Brothers) did a great job leading this all-day field trip!

In May, the Mount Boucherie  Secondary Forestry class visited Gorman Brothers' in Westbank.  They received a presentation on the history of the establishment and an extensive sawmill tour.  A few weeks later, they took part in a timber cruise activity with Kalon, Randy Hardy and Bryan Darroch (Gorman Bros).
