Betty-Ann
McDonald and Ann Polson of the Shuswap Branch of Canadian Women
in Timber attended the TLA convention in Vancouver in January,
volunteering to host the ILA Forestry Education van. About
100 grade 6 students were brought through the van, accompanied
by BCIT Forestry students. They were very interested and
asked many questions. Many had heard of the Mountain Pine
Beetle and were intrigued with the bug and beetle display. The
students also enjoyed a loggers' show, a new venue that took place
inside the exhibition hall.
At the April ILA tradeshow in Kamloops, the
ILA once again generously provided a booth for the Shuswap Branch
of Canadian Women in Timber. Although
the crowds didn't seem as large this year, Ann and Betty-Ann were
kept quite busy giving out information, contest prizes and the
new "Splinter" lapel pin.
The Shuswap Branch has been presenting their school programs to
local schools for a number of years now and are planning to revamp
the programs for the new school year. A poster on forestry careers
is also in the works.
This year, the CWIT AGM will
be held in Kelowna on September 30, with Mary Tracey, BC Director
for WoodWORKS, speaking on the success of the "BC Builds with Wood" program.
