Forest Educators Awarded Minister's
Award of Excellence
At
the 48th Annual Interior Logging Association Trades Convention
held in Kamloops recently, forest educators, Deb Sluggett and Jeannie
Steele, were honoured by the Honourable Rich Coleman, Minister
of Forests and Range, who presented them with a Minister's "Award
of Excellence for Advancing Forestry Education in BC".
Deb
and Jeannie have a long history together in forest education in
the Southern Interior, having worked together for close to a decade
building and developing a comprehensive, highly-acclaimed forest
education program for teachers and students, until Jeannie's retirement
in the fall of 2004. This year's award recognized their most recent
accomplishment in developing the DVD and lesson package "CLEM-A
Journey into BC's Logging Industry", with Jeannie coming
out of retirement to team up once again with Debbie.

"CLEM" shows BC's high-tech forest
harvesting machines in action, with impressive footage from around
the province. Distributed throughout all BC public, private and
aboriginal schools, this resource introduces students and teachers
to today's modern technology and careers in harvesting, demonstrating
how logging has become more efficient, more environmentally-friendly
and much safer than in the past. It will be used as a stand-alone
package by some districts or as a part of Deb and Jeannie's Gr.
5 teaching kit, "Our
Living Resource- the Forest", presently used in
many schools in the Southern Interior.
Many thanks go out to all the supporters
of "CLEM",
along with our congratulations to Deb and Jeannie on receiving
this well-deserved honour for their forest education contributions!!
