Students Compete in Environmental Mind Grind Honouring Earth Day

The seventh annual Environmental Mind Grind competition took place recently on April 22, honouring Earth Day. Elementary and middle school teams from throughout Southern Interior cities such as Kamloops, Vernon, Kelowna, Penticton and Trail demonstrated their knowledge of local environmental issues by competing for prizes and a chance to qualify for the Interior championships in May in Kelowna.

In the Central Okanagan, twenty-five elementary and middle school teams squared off to compete in the Terasen Gas Environmental Mind Grind Challenge with hundreds of parents, friends and fellow students cheering them on.

One of the winning teams in the Central Okanagan for 2006.

First and second place teams went on to compete against winners from the North and South Okanagan, the West Kootenay and the City of Kamloops for the Regional Championship on May 6th. High school students also competed at that time with other regions.

Organizing this year's Environmental Mind Grind event included the Regional Waste Reduction Office, the City of Kelowna Environmental and Transportation Divisions, Regional Parks and Recreation Services and Water Smart.

Proud sponsors of this year's challenge included Terasen Gas, Harmony Honda, the Council of Forest Industries, Tolko Industries, Metro Waste Paper Recovery, Waste Management, the Capital News, Sun FM, CHBC, Little Caesar's Pizza, Dairy Queen, Fortis, Clorox and Tetrapak.
