Promoting Forestry as a Career Choice- Visiting Local
High Schools
Every
year we have forestry instructors from BCIT, UBC, Selkirk College
and TRU visit our high schools. In the fall, we arranged for BCIT
and UBC to make presentations. This spring, we had Selkirk and
TRU. This is not your usual "recruitment" presentation. We ask
the presenters to offer a mini-forestry lesson that highlights
the skills students will learn and how they apply to various careers
related to our natural resources. The presenters display some of
the smaller equipment students will learn to use, talk about their
own working experiences and discuss some of the partnerships that
involve students visiting other countries. The goal is to introduce
the "big picture" that is forestry and encourage students to explore
possibilities that might suit their interests and lifestyle. The
career counsellors are thrilled because this presentation has something
for everyone. It promotes the idea that an average student can
ladder from one post secondary institution to another, gradually
building their skills and achieving diplomas and/or degrees along
the way.
