Expanding Our Roots
Forest Capital 2005- Revelstoke, BC
Revelstoke is very proud to be the Forest Capital
of BC for 2005. The City is supporting many different events in
the coming year. Two recent events involved the local schools. During
National Forest Week, foresters went to all five Revelstoke schools
and talked to students about Forest Health. The presentations were
very well-received and were developed by educational liaisons, Deb
Sluggett ( RCFC, LP Canada, Bell Pole, Downie Lumber and Tolko)
and Jennifer Stewart (Tolko). Revelstoke Community Forest Corporation
donated tree seedlings for every class attending the talk. Each
seedling was wrapped in burlap and had a Forest Capital sticker
attached to it. Several high school classes wrapped the trees and
in the process, learned the importance of handling seedlings with
care. All the kids were thrilled with their trees!
Another recent event occurring in the schools was
a poster contest. Each grade had a different forest theme to illustrate,
such as summer users of the Forest – human, or winter users
of the Forest – animal with the title of the posters to be
Our Forests. The judging occurred during National Forest Week. The
prize for the winner of each grade level was a certificate and helicopter
ride. The mayor of Revelstoke presented the winners their certificate
during a City Council Meeting. Selkirk Mountain Helicopters generously
donated the prize. All participants received a certificate with
their name on it, a Forest Capital Sticker and a Revelstoke pen.
