ILA Trades Convention and Mini Education
Fair:
“Growing a Skilled Force for an Expanding Forest Industry”
(Vernon)
April 15 & 16, 2005
Every second year, the Interior Logging Association
Tradesconvention is held in Vernon. Two
years ago,and again this year, we arranged for a “mini-career
fair” to be a part of the event. This year, forestry and resource
science recruiters from 10 post secondary schools as well as representatives
from 6 forest education groups agreed to take part. This was an
opportunity for students, parents and the general public to discuss
career opportunities in the forest industry. Approximately 585 high
school students and 200+ elementary students attended the event.

Younger students toured
the outdoor exhibits to learn about machines and technology. |

Secondary students talked
to post secondary school forestry program recruiters. about
costs, registration, accommodation, programs, etc.… |

Outdoor exhibits were
a major draw for all students as well as the general public.
|

Education starts at a
young age. Our students need to know that the industry is
very diverse, with opportunities that require technological
skills as well as an understanding of the science used in
managing our forests. |

The ILA ladies’
event featured a guided tour of Tolko’s Lavington,
BC sawmill.
|

The technology used by
the forest industry is very high tech. The career opportunities
both in the trades and at the professional level are increasing
as baby boomers begin to retire. |
