COFI South Forest Education
Debbie Bazett (Forest Educator)
COFI South's Forest Educator recently commissioned a new 6 Billionth Seedling poster to be designed, commemorating the past year's significant milestone in BC's reforestation history. This poster was distributed to Northern and Southern Interior elementary schools and includes reforestation facts on the back. It can be viewed or downloaded from the Learn Forestry forest education website at www.learnforestry.com. If you are a BC resident and would like a copy of the poster, go to the "Contacts" section on the website and make a request to one of the forest educators listed there.
Throughout the fall, COFI South Forest Education has been involved in supporting all of the Southern Interior zone forest education programs by providing resources, career materials, display and promotional items and teacher handouts. Another project for the COFI South Forest Educator included updating forestry study packages at the Elementary, Middle and Secondary levels for the 2009 Environmental Mind Grind competitions, an event which sees numerous school teams from around the Southern Interior compete in a game show format to test their knowledge about the environment. Forestry question packages will be again be provided by the COFI South Forest Educator for this spring competition, with the communities of Penticton, Kelowna and Vernon hosting teams for local playoffs in April, along with Kamloops, Quesnel and Nanaimo. Successful teams in the local competitions will attend BC Playoffs in Vernon in May to compete in the finals and determine overall winners.
