Teacher Pro D Days
On August 30th eleven teachers from SD#67 (Penticton) toured an Okanagan Falls woodlands site, where they learned about silviculture systems, reforestation, forest ecology, forest health and integrated forest management. Kalon organized and oversaw this event, while Jay Mervyn (Weyerhaeuser) and Mike Jobke (BCTS) acted as tour guides/guest speakers.
In October, nineteen teachers were taken on an all-day field trip where they learned about: fire history, protection and management, silviculture systems, reforestation, harvesting methods and forestry planning, and forest measurements. Jennifer and Kalon worked together to organize and oversee this event, while Mike Jobke (BCTS), Harold Waters (Tolko) and Rob Moore (MOF) presented.
Both Pro-D events were a huge success- thanks to everyone who volunteered their time, knowledge and expertise! Some of the teacher comments received included: "I now have a …better understanding of forest practices and ecology"; "I enjoyed …learning about the different aspects of forestry from the people who know it best"; "Forestry is a dynamic industry" and "I was impressed by the amount of valuable info passed on today".
