LESSON OVERVIEW

CAREERS AND TECHNOLOGY

    Learning Outcome:
    • Students will observe the diverse role of technology in the forest industry
    • Students will see the effects of technology on the workplace and discover how this effects lifestyles
    • Students will identify various careers in forestry

    Question:
    • When considering a career, how many other extended jobs can you identify?
    • What types of technology did you learn about from the video?
    • How do you think some of these tasks might have been performed years ago?
    • Name some careers you noticed on the video.
    • Can you think of some other careers that might be related to the forest industry? (supporting careers - machinery and equipment, computer equipment and office related, vehicle trade, other construction materials, and so on....)

    Setting the Stage:

    Part 1: (Time: 10-15 minutes)

    • Brainstorming career opportunities surrounding the tree planter

    Part 2: (Time: 25 minutes)
    • Students will view the first 15 minute portion of the video:

      Amazing Machines of the Forest Products Industry

    • While they view this video, they will want to identify the following:
      -technology - examples of interesting machines; a favorite machine
      -careers - be prepared to talk about at least 2 careers - what do you think they'd be like.....
    • Students do Activity Worksheet #9.7 or pdf version -drawing and describing their favorite machine

    Part 3: (Time: 25-40 minutes -this part could be eliminated if not enough time )
    • Students view the remaining portion of the video and will be prepared to discuss other examples of technology and careers
