River Drive story

..Orond Brashier (logged and operated sawmills
around Parson most of his life)

"I did have a narrow squeak. Another young fellow
and I were in rough water. We had a jam on a rainy
morning, which didn't make much difference because
you were wet anyway. His caulks were gone. We'd
been there a couple of weeks and his feet were in bad
shape. So he put a pair of rubbers on, which is a
terrible mistake, to walk on a slippery log. Anyway we
worked on a jam and it started to go. We both were
gonna run to shore, and he slipped in. I wasn't
thinking at all. I jumped right in after him and got a
hold of him. There were logs banging into us and
pushing us. I thought to myself, This is it. I'm not
gonna get out of here. We were being carried along.
I don't know how we stayed on top even. We swept
through a huge clump of willows that had broken off
into the river but were still rooted. I hung on. I was
still hanging onto him and he got a hold of those
willows, and somehow, we got out of there. We were
sure banged and bruised when we got out. The old
Norwegian foreman, as soon as he found out we
could still walk, he says, "Well, we is bound to on
with it."
